Awarded the contract to design, fabricate, deliver, and install this vital piece of infrastructure, the 122-tonne Sodom Bridge formed a key element of the wider project works. Despite a highly challenging and stringent 10-week programme, the Cairnhill team completed this project through crucial planning, collaboration, and technical expertise; fully meeting all of the client’s specifications and requirements surrounding quality standards, safety compliance, and overall performance.

Once fabrication was completed, both bridge spans were transported to the painters for application of the specified protective coating system. Following painting, the spans were returned to our Renfrew facility, being prepared for concrete placement. The concrete base was poured evenly, providing a suitable surface for the application of waterproofing to each span. A Servipak rubber adhesive was then applied, creating a robust protective layer to ensure long-term durability of both steelwork and concrete elements.

Final finishing works were completed on both bridge spans, including the application of anti-corrosion paint to all exposed steelwork to provide long-term protection. Following this, a trial build was carried out at our facility, during which both spans were accurately positioned onto the concrete cill beams. This process allowed all aspects to be thoroughly checked, ensuring the client’s requirements were fully satisfied prior to delivery and installation on site.

Our client conducted a comprehensive inspection of all four bridge spans to verify that every specification, tolerance, and quality requirement had been fully met. Following their formal approval, we were authorised to proceed with the next phase of the project, involving careful loading, secure transportation, and the final installation of the spans onsite.

Our highly experienced installation teams are accustomed to working in some of the UK’s most challenging and safety-critical infrastructure environments, and the installation of Sodom Bridge on a key transport route was no exception. A team of approximately 16 operatives completed the bridge deck installation in around six hours, followed by a further 12 hours to finalise all auxiliary works.
