Recently, our Metrology and Inspection Division, C-Met, completed a technically challenging staircase extension, demonstrating its reverse engineering capabilities and digital expertise. The project required a new staircase and intermediate platform to extend from an existing structure from Level One to Ground Floor – matching the current geometry with precision. A full 3D LiDAR scan of the existing steelwork was carried out using a FARO Focus Premium scanner, capturing highly accurate point cloud data of the live environment.
From this, we extracted key geometries, cylinders, planes, angles, and radii – directly from the point cloud. Allowing us to interpret the original design and begin rebuilding it digitally, the use of BuildIT Construction and Tekla enabled the development of a precise 3D model of the new staircase, incorporating level height, pitch angles, and the turning radius at the half landing.
This workflow enabled us to design and fabricate components with incredible accuracy, avoid clashes with permanent works, deliver a seamless fit, and reduce on-site risk. As part of our continued investment in advanced technology, C-Met brings these capabilities together to support smarter, more accurate project delivery.
